The law often acts as a mirror to society. It sets out what a society finds acceptable as behaviour and where our red lines lie. Whilst there have been vast improvements to the lives of women around the world in the last few decades and at the same time, a number of setbacks. This has been reflected in various law cases, treaties, and conventions.
As attitudes inevitably change, as do laws. The timeline below shows a number of landmark cases on women’s rights and the events that supported these over the last fifty years. Whilst this is high-level and does not outline some of the setbacks experienced by women’s rights – of course, the law is only writing without justice.
